Green plantations surrounded by rich nature
Because they don’t use chemicals in their plantations, plantations have and are surrounded by rich greens where chameleons are walking. Their plantations has got BIO certification.
Also the cooperative has planted native trees to enhance greens around their plantations.
Mr. Hery leads the cooperative and their activities
Mr. Hery has led activities of the cooperative. However, he is not a member of the cooperative. He is an adviser and business partner of the cooperative.
Mr. Hery studied agriculture in university, and had engaged in agriculture business. He became independent in 2007 and since then he has worked together with the cooperative. Mr. Hery has put importance on sustainable agriculture and at the same time he has tried to put added value on their products and has got BIO certification and FLO certification. He leads farmers, telling them good agriculture practice and on the other hand trying to develop market of their products.
When I visited a village with him, many farmers, even the chief of the village came to see us, and I found that he was very much admired.
Main players are the farmers
Mr. Hery has done lots of things to the cooperative, however, of course, the main actors are the farmers. They manage their plantation thoroughly, and therefore vanilla grows very well. I had very strong impression on farmers’ attitude with confident and pride when they showed me their plantations and had explanations how they maintain plantations and raise their vanilla.
“To have good vanilla, good soil is necessary. Here we have very good soil and we don’t need to use fertiliser. We sometimes have vermin and diseases. When we find them, we just get rid of them. That’s enough. We don’t need to use any chemicals.” Farmers told me with smiles on their faces.
